The Rebetiko Carnival’s main focus is outreach work. We are constantly raising funds to bring music to hospitals, care homes, refugee shelters, special needs care centres and anywhere that needs the joy and therapy of music. We already have planned visits to many several venues. Some we have established a wonderful relationship with over the last 8 years and others are new. We are always looking for new places to bring music to.
Future work:
Spring Grove, London, Elderly people’s residence
Spring Lane, London, Elderly people’s residence
Spring view, London, Elderly people’s residence
Nutley, Uckfield, Residence for people with special needs
Ingfield Manor, Billinghurst, School for children with special needs.
The education and community work, throughout the year, can cover anything from working in pre schools for children of three years old up to Sixth form and above. Greek music is a wonderful way of learning about different rhythms, sounds of the world and the skills needed to work in a group with other people. It is a great way of learning creative skills through listening, improvisation and dance. We work with both Greek schools and British schools, bringing either our own workshops or looking at GCSE and A level curriculums with the schools and working at the world music modules with them. The most recent project we worked on was a one day workshop which brought together thirty young instrumentalists with a choir of sixty people aged from six to eighty years old. It involved children from different schools as well as a local community choir. After a full day of workshops, learning songs, looking at improvisation and creating their own arrangements of music, in the evening they were joined by a ten piece band of professional Greek musicians to perform in a concert together.
We work closely with several schools and groups including Asterakia, Oathall Community College, St Joseph’s pre school in Haywards Heath and Queenswood school in Hatfield.
Future work: tbc
Not currently running. We hope to get this started again in the future and will announce if and when this happens on all listings and social media.
OPEN TO ANYONE! Amateurs, Professionals, Greeks and non-Greeks.
Love Greek music? Love singing? Join our new choir for the opportunity to perform in live concerts within the safety of a large group of people who love singing! Although the music is Greek, you do not have to be Greek to sing it. Music by Theodorakis, Hadjidakis, Xarhakos and others…some rebetika…some more traditional music…a taste of a variety of Greece. Ages 15 to 115 accepted. We will have musicians from the band there and from Kite to help with all levels of experience. If you are more comfortable reading from a part we will provide those, if you do not read music we will also be learning by ear. However scary an experience like this may be to begin with, please work up the courage to come. It is all about the joy of singing and making music together in whatever way we can and reaching the highest possible level…from whatever point we start at. Come, give it a go and see what you think.
