Karsilamas on the Guitar and the Bouzouki

Improve phrasing and groove feeling through the nuances of Karsilamas dance

Thursday 19th June 2025 @ DB Music London

The “Karsilamas” dance is primarily performed by two people facing each other. Its name comes from the Turkish word “karsi,” which means “opposite” in Greek.

Seminar on the Karsilamas Dance

  • We will examine the structure of its rhythm and how melodies are layered over it.
  • As a study tool, we will use the “Antikrystos of Asia Minor” in Makam Hicaz.

Solo instruments coordinated by Alekos Tsolakis
Accompanying instruments coordinated by Akis Pitsanis

Goals

  • To improve our phrasing by understanding the melodic patterns of the composition.
  • To feel the pulse of the rhythm as a dance, leading our playing toward freer expression.

Notes

  • Participants will receive seminar materials via email two weeks in advance.
  • In the first part of the seminar, students will be divided into two groups.
