Rebetika of the Gramophone and Beyond

An evening of rebetika songs of all eras with some of the greatest musicians in this genre performing today.

Fotis Vergopoulos was born on the 23/11/1988 in Melbourne, Australia. Before he even turned one his family relocated to his spiritual home in Koroni Messinias, Greece. His involvement with music comes at the young age of 6 with the main trigger being his father Nikos who was an inaugural member of the Apodimi Kompania who started off in Melbourne in the early 80’s.

After Fotis completes his year 12 studies, he returns to his birthplace and completes a Civil Engineering degree. During this time Fotis will really blossom into his musical journey and finds himself playing live at various venues and quite a few festivals (Brunswick Music Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival). 

Since late 2012 he has returned to Athens and has taken part in various festivals around Greece and around the world. He has collaborated artists such as Babis Goles, Agathon Iakovidis, Manolis Pappos, Dimitra Galani, Martha Frintzila , Anatoli Margiola. 


Kostis Kostakis
was born in 1986 and grew up in Athens. At the age of 8 he started guitar and music theory lessons at the conservatory. Later, during the years of high school he started electric guitar and participated in various student groups. 

Rebetiko and Smyrna songs followed him from a very young age, since his father is an amateur accordion player. From the age of 18 years old has been professionally involved in music.

From 2005 to 2011 he participated in the HiPsi rebetiko band through which he thoroughly studied first compositions and performances of rebetiko songs and also the great guitarists.

In 2011 he collaborated with the music band Elektrobalkana.

Since 2012 and for 10 annual years he participated in the music group Rebetien. He was formed as main member of the band, playing guitar. For 10 years Rebetien presented repertoire both from rebetiko and greek traditional music. Today they continue playing music with name Rebeti.

Since 2015 he has been participating in Trio Katara Band and from 2019 in Sabi Band. Both bands are oriented to their own compositions, connecting gramophone sound with contemporary musical patterns.

Since 2017, he has been playing Lap steel guitar and he participated in White Birds Band, a tribute to a great musician and composer Kostas Bezos. 

In 2021 he collaborates with Fotis Siotas, and he participates in his band playing lap steel guitar. 

He was collaborated with Babi Gkole, Agathona Iakovidi, Solo Lekka, Haig Yazdjian, Dimitri Mitsotaki, Niko Tatasopoulo, Dimitri Mistakidi, Foti Siota, Vasili Skouta, Dimitri Mitaraki, Mario Papadea, Yianni Niarcho and other great musicians. 

He has attended in a guitar course with Erkan Ogur in Houdetsi.


Dimitris Koustas
was born in Athens, Greece in 1978. He studied with Kostas Tsilidis in the National Conservatory of Greece from where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in accordion and advanced theory.

He continued his studies in accordion with Iraklis Vavatsikas in the Fillipos Nakas’ conservatory, and with Raymond Bodell in the University of Surrey where he also studied composition with Steve Goss and Classical Studio Production with Sebastian Forbes. He finished his studies in classical accordion with Owen Murray (Royal Academy of Music). 

He has performed as a soloist and as a member of various groups in Athens, London, Paris, Italy and Austria . His performances include the Royal Albert Hall, Jazz Cafe, Le Divan Du Monde (Paris France), Warwick International Festival, the City Of London School and various bars and restaurants.

His compositional work includes three full albums ,”Melting Pot”, “9Th Hour talk” and “Anergos Akrovatis” which are published by DNAlabel. 

He has also composed music for the theatre, documentaries, art installations and performance acts. 

His book “Politika Of Armonika” published by faggotobooks consists of twenty pieces from Asia Minor and Istambul and are representative of the Smyrneiko and early Rebetiko tradition.


Andria Antoniou,
is a London-based vocalist and educator of jazz, Latin music and Greek Retro music. She collaborated with prominent representatives of the Latin-jazz, Greek and musical theatre music scene: George Hatzinasios (Greece), the band ‘Classico Latino’ (Colombia & UK), Omar Puente (Cuba), Mario Bakuna (Brazil), Roman Gomez (Argentina) and the West End Musical Director, Greg Arrowsmith. Performance highlights include: Union Chapel London (UK), King’s place London (UK), St’ James Church (UK), Teatro Colón de Bogotá (CO), the Vortex (UK), Pizza Express Jazz club (UK), Fougaro Art Center (GR), Gialino Theatro (GR), Athina Live (GR), La Linea Latin music festival, amongst others. Andria released her first debut album with Roman Gomez entitled ‘Encuentro’ for which they have received second place at the LUKAS 2019 award. She also features as a guest on Classico Latino’s latest album ‘Havana Classics’ recorded in 2018 at Egrem Studios in Cuba. Recent highlights include the creation of Greek-latin fusion band Babesa Cubana and the creative project ‘Wanderlust’ through which she aims to promote a sense of unity in cultural diversity.
