Songs of Piraeus

with Rebetiko Carnival Musicians

Saturday 3rd June 2023 @ Jamboree

From the old days to the present, Piraeus has been a hub for many people; a trading hub, a cultural hub and most importantly a passage for the people! A passage for a better life, hopes and dreams. In this concert, the Rebetiko Carnival musicians will take you on a journey through Piraeus’ streets, small alleys, and corners reviving Smyrneiko, Rebetiko and contemporary composers such as Hatzidakis, Ksarhakos and Theodorakis.

“You can see and do anything in Piraeus, except pretending to be tough”
D. Haritopoulos

About the photo: This is the bridge of Agios Dionysis. Papaioannou used to say that you can not be considered a magas if you haven’t crossed the bridge of Agios Dionysis. This is the bridge that was connecting Piraeus with Drapetsona.

Musicians:

Glykeria Kissa, voice

Manolis Taouxis, voice/bouzouki

George Tsolakis, voice/guitar

George Angelopoulos, bouzouki

Pavlos Carvalho, double bass

The Rebetiko Carnival musicians are a group brought together by the Rebetiko Carnival festival, representing some of the UK’s most loved Greek bands. For this evening’s performance, they are formed from musicians of Plastikes Karekles, Amalgama and the Icons of Greek Music project. Between them they have performed at festivals in Greece, France, Italy, Scotland, Wales and Qatar. In the UK they have performed at Purcell Room, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, St David’s Hall as part of the Proms, as well as more intimate venues such as the Green Note, Vortex and the Forge, London. They have also performed at Kings Place, London both as part of the Rebetiko Carnival festival and Equator: Women of the World festival as well as at the Sidmouth Folk Festival.
